Have you ever reached a point in your career, reflected on your progress, and mused ‘I’m amazed at how I got to this point”?
Today is one of those days and in this post I offer a genuine account of why this is so.
I’m sitting on the train, heading to Melbourne because I am scheduled to co-present findings of a project at a University focus group. This is the same University where I studied Fine Art (Printmaking) nineteen years ago, and it’s a bit surreal to be honest.
Being a self-confessed multipotentialite, I’ve often been self-critical about my career journey. I held a belief since the day I dropped out of University that I was a failure for not completing an undergraduate. And by ‘only’ acquiring a Diploma level qualification or two, that I’m unworthy of success.
And on the flip-side, the achievements I’ve racked up along this nineteen year journey highlight resilience, triumph, courage, confidence, compassion, wisdom and success.
These qualities are also a foundation for success in business.
What else does a person need to imbue to achieve ‘success’ in business?
In the list below I share my perspective, and would love to hear your thoughts too.
Being self-employed is not an easy ride. You will face challenges on a daily basis, and the positive mental attitude you employ will be the key to overcoming adversity.
Resilience, simply put, means bouncing back from adversity. And a successful entrepreneur will have the skills, knowledge and mental attitude to do so.
A positive mental attitude
You are what you think and like attracts like.
Awareness of your state of mind during crisis helps transform your thinking from negative to positive.
I love this quote, because from ‘bad’ always comes ‘good’. And awareness of the present moment and the gifts of the journey from there to here will help you cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness.

How many times have you volunteered and then felt a sense of gratitude for doing so?
I view volunteering and community development as selflessness that makes the world go around.
Stephen R. Covey speaks of reciprocity as a win-win for both parties – mutual benefit if you will – however I believe selflessness is the key when giving back to the community. Engage in a compassionate act because you want to help, rather than seeking accolades.
Forming & attaining a vision
A crystal clear business vision is crucial if you want your venture to succeed. And by having a deeper understanding of what you want to achieve in business, your key drivers, your values, your habits and your goals, you will have a solid framework to attain your vision.
Launching a business without a plan gives space for flexibility and allows you to use your resilience muscle. And it’s not ideal because it’s like captaining a ship in iceberg laden water without GPS. A plan is your navigation – it’s crucial to achieving success.

Emotional intelligence and self-awareness are essential if you want to succeed in life because life throws curve balls and how you respond to such times will determine your ability to rise and thrive.
Meditation is a wonderful practice to develop self-awareness, and is something I have practiced daily for two years.
Self-compassion, compassion & empathy
If you can’t be kind to yourself, how can you inspire others?
Self-compassion is a foundation for resilience, and I believe that successful people are kind to themselves first.
When you understand your priorities, drivers and values, you are able to make decisions with self-compassion. The flow on effect is that you have more compassion and empathy for others, which contributes to the happiness of yourself and others.
Holding onto negative emotions and situations will harm you more than another person in the long run.
A successful, happy, self-aware individual knows how to let go.
I started practicing H’oponopono two years ago as a recommendation from a Clarity & Strategy Session with Fiona Redding of The Happiness Hunter. It’s a simple mantra you recite to yourself when you are aware you need to forgive:
“I’m sorry, please forgive me, I love you, thank you.”
